  1. broadband streaming - pay per view -

  1. NGOs often do this for video films/documentaries.They support/produce/sell and distribute.e.g. MSSRF sells
the video films produced by it.

But tamil little magazines have not evinced much interest in short films/documentaries. a distribution channel is lacking.
i know that many documentary film makers use NGOs/film
clubs as channels for distribution/screening.your ideas should get the attention of the film makers.

  3. Badri, you are the man! I am so glad that a healthy discussion is taking place on this now. Your points are great. We can do a brain storming session on those points on blogs itself, analysing the pros and cons of each idea. If we could do a project charter (thita varaivu) to carry forward once we finalise on this, please let me know how can I be of any help. I have seen here, Normally the NRIs wish to do so many good things back to the country but they lack trust worthy and unselfish resources and field people in India to implement the same. So, lets continue the discussion on this. - PK Sivakumar

  4. I like to post a point in this regard. I have tried selling my music online via web downloads.
In simple words it does not work. Credit Card charging, transaction cost is quite high, higher than the product cost itself.
How many will be willing to pay to watch a movie, that too on a computer, Imo, in general streaming is not worth it in long run. Watching it on the internet is very tiring, the video quality is simply killed; Audio is also taken for a ride. I mixed Arun’s movie in Dolby Digital, but yet to watch it on DD5.1 system. There is no method to distribute the real quality I recorded. I don’t want to compromise on anything just because I could not find a medium to distribute my art.
Trigger Street does web distribution quite well, reason being, in US there are special interest groups for short films, so it is kind of successful, but back home I am sure people have very limited interest in this form of art.
Best bet would be contact distributing company which screens feature films in every city and show these short films along with them. By this cost and platform is shared. This will also bring more viewer ship.

  5. Srikanth, I do not agree with your views entirely. There is a quality loss when movies are streamed off internet. Both video and audio have quality loss. If you feel too strongly about such issues, you should not distribute *your* movie that way, and sell it only as DVDs. That may not exactly be the view of other producers. In any emerging medium, one can accept a certain quality loss, if the output still can convey the overall production qualities, and more importantly the medium and the message. As the bandwidth increases, one can provide streaming which is of DVD quality. A 512 kbps stream, for example, could be very good.

Since I do not have any details about your attempt to distribute your music, I can't say much. However your experience should be taken into account in building any plan. But having enough experience in delivering video of live cricket matches and having a fairly good understanding of the Indian diaspora market in USA, Canada and the rest of the world, besides a reasonable knowledge of the Indian market and the possibilities here, I think there is some potential here.

One should explore working with distribution companies, as you suggest. However that should not preclude working on any other model as well. It is not either ... or.

I think you are a bit too condescending with your statement "but back home I am sure people have very limited interest in this form of art."

However your suggestions are valid and should be taken into account by anyone who is trying to build a business in this area. Thanks.

  7. Badiri,
If you feel too strongly about such issues, you should not distribute *your* movie that way, and sell it only as DVDs., Yes I have made it clear; I will not compromise on quality based on the media.

And regarding web distribution of cricket matches, frankly it was totally a bad experience for me at least. The frame rate and refresh rates are totally not suitable for long time viewing, very tiring for eyes. Viewer becomes a "gamer" rather, the actions are too fast when compared to Television refresh rates. Most of them are subscribing just because there is no other alternative, once they find one, 75% will shift to that. I did it, in spite of paying for the live telecast via web, once SonyTv got the live coverage, I paid and shifted.
So Computer video streaming does not work for me. Anyways, that’s me.

And on people back home, yes, I say this after some base ground work, there is no big following for private music and private movies, [especially in Tamil].I have discussed a lot with producers and audio companies who are very skeptical on the market. No one favors this approach. Feature film is the only gateway as of now.

If you see even triggersteet.com have no real clones, which indicates that is not yet a viable business model. I read few months ago that Star wars “pugaz” George Lucas is devising a direct to theater video systems via satellite using which he will be beaming to theaters all around the world. Currently the domestic satellite system in US has digital audio and video capabilities. We get most of the movies in High definition and DD/DTS. So there are good systems in place. It is matter of time India gets it. However from a small timer’s point of view it is a costly proposition.

In my opinion, various business model needs to be experimented until the best is obtained.

  8. Dear Badri,
Greetings. The discussion about short films were suddenly stopped. Why? Did you read the trackback? Actually, Cable TV idea seems to be feasible and good.
    Looking forward.
    Love,Arun
